Who We Are

With my father, Lester

Me at an early age with my father, Lester, great fan of Babe Ruth and, especially, of Hank Greenberg, Lester’s contemporary, who gave New York City Jewish boys of that generation a tremendous sense of pride. Greenberg’s heroics at James Monroe High School in the Bronx were the stuff of legend. His high-school batting records stood for more than a quarter of a century until another legendary New Yorker, Ed Kranepool of the Mets, smashed them. Never one to talk about himself, Lester had week eyesight from childhood, and he even fought blindness from a work-related accident that occurred around the time this photograph was taken—almost certainly by my mother, Leah (as she was known in America).
