Mickey Mantle in Joplin

Mickey Mantle famously played shortstop for the Joplin Miners in the minor leagues. We are horrified and saddened by the devastation in this historic town, which is also associated with Route 66 as well as Bonnie and Clyde.

    When I first heard about the tragedy in Joplin the first thought that came to me was, “Gee, Mickey played there in the minors.” I remember reading Mickey’s bio (the first of many I’ve read) in fifth grade, taking it out of the school library and clandestinely reading it in other classes, propped up on my desk inside the gigantic social studies books of elementary school days…..
